Happy New Year!
During this time of year, people like to make New Year’s resolutions. I also know several people who pick a word that will define their next year. Do you do either of these things?
I had the pleasure of taking a vacation with my husband just after New Year’s, and while sitting on a beach, soaking up sun, I thought a lot about my future. Writing goals, life goals, family goals, etc. Do you take time to stop and reflect on where your life is and where you want it to go? I want to ask you a question that I ask myself.
What will you build your life on?
This post begins a three part series on building your life on the most important thing. We’ll get into that as we go.
Think about the Biblical story of the Wise man and the Foolish man. Do you know the song? I remember singing it at Vacation Bible School during my childhood! The story is this: Two men each build a house. One is wise, placing his house on rock–a firm foundation–while the other is foolish, building his house on sand–a shifty foundation. When the rains came, the floods rose, and the winds blew, which one stood firm? The one built on rock or sand?
What will you build you life on?
Here is the story of the Wise and Foolish men in its entirety:
“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.” Luke 6: 46-49
Soft ground or hard rock: The choice on which to build is ours.
Next week, we’ll compare the two — rock and sand — and look at another Biblical character who had to decide where to build his life and who to trust.
Are you looking for somewhere to build your life?
Debating between Rock and Sand?
Or maybe you know you want to build your life on Rock but don’t know how. God can help you do that, if you seek Him, His word, and His church.
I’d be happy to talk with you, pray with you, and point you in a direction that leads to Christ. Just let me know. Meanwhile, tune in next week for part 2.
